Topic:  Machine Stitching - Ease Stitch

Ease Stitch

This is similar to gathering stitch and stay stitch.  Increase the stitch length to between 3 – 5 mm (⅛ – ¼ in), depending on the thickness of the fabric, and if necessary, slightly loosen the needle tension so that the fabric gathers very, very slightly.  Stitch within the seam allowance, close to the seam line.  Ease stitch is used to fit slightly longer pieces of fabric to shorter lengths such as sleeves into sleeve heads without any gathers or folds appearing on the right side of the garment.   Once stitched, match the notches and fit the eased section to the straight piece.  If necessary, draw the bobbin thread of the ease stitching up slightly to improve the fit and distribute the fullness evenly.  With the ease section uppermost, finish by machine stitching the pieces together.
