Use a long basting stitch (the longest stitch available on your sewing machine). Use a contrasting colour thread both in the bobbin and on top so the stitches can easily be removed later. Leave long thread tails at each end of the stitching and stitch within the seam allowance. Pull up using the bobbin thread, adjusting the gathers evenly along the length as you go. If gathering a long edge, divide the length in half and stitch and gather each half at a time. When sewing medium to heavyweight fabrics, stitch two rows of gathering stitch and pull up both together. Once fully gathered to fit the straight edge, tie off the tails to keep the fabric gathered. Pin with right sides together and machine stitch with the gathered fabric uppermost. Press carefully to avoid crushing the fabric gathers.
